Korean Bibimbap – The Colorful Mixed Rice Bowl

Bibimbap is a traditional Korean dish consisting of steamed rice topped with assorted sautéed vegetables, marinated beef, and a fried egg. The key element is
gochujang
, a spicy red chili paste that ties all the flavors together. Before eating, everything is mixed thoroughly, creating a harmonious blend of textures, colors, and tastes in every bite.
Ingredients (Serves 2–3)
2 cups steamed short-grain rice
200 g beef (sirloin or ribeye), thinly sliced
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 carrot, julienned
1 zucchini, julienned
1 cup spinach
4 shiitake mushrooms, sliced
2 eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Gochujang (Korean chili paste) for serving
Sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
Marinate the beef with soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and minced garlic for at least 15 minutes. Sauté each vegetable separately in a little oil until tender but still crisp. Fry the eggs sunny-side-up and set aside. In bowls, place a serving of steamed rice, then arrange the sautéed vegetables and beef on top in sections for a colorful presentation.
Add the fried egg on top and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve with a generous dollop of gochujang on the side. Mix everything thoroughly before eating so the flavors blend together. Bibimbap can also be served in a hot stone bowl (
dolsot
) for a crispy rice texture at the bottom.
Tips for Authentic Flavor
Sauté vegetables separately to maintain their individual flavors and textures.
Use authentic Korean gochujang for the proper balance of heat and sweetness.
Adjust the spiciness by controlling the amount of chili paste.
A hot stone bowl enhances the experience with crispy rice layers.
Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast between warm rice, sautéed veggies, and runny egg.
